Still the Favorite Bedtime Song

I'm still singing this song to Calvin every night at bedtime. . . going on 3 years or so I think. . . crazy little guy.  I bet I hold the world record for singing this song the most number of times.

In case you're wondering if there's a mix-up, no. . . it really is this song:

I know I'll miss it someday when he stops requesting it. . . hopefully he'll stop requesting it. . .  Someday.  :)

Poor Rick. . .

One cool thing about adoption is that the husband gets to go through a lot of what the wife has to go through (vs bio pregnancies)!  All the appointments, all the signing of papers, trips to the bank for notarizations, fingerprint appointments, home visits/interviews, training hours, and all the SHOTS!  It's great! :)
But I do feel bad for Rick after what happened last week after we both went in for our travel vaccinations.  I had been in the week before to get my first 4, but this was Rick's first time in.  Of course, it's always drama-drama-drama with Rick.  Just kidding--he's the most drama-free person I know!  But this was a pretty exciting day. . . now that I know he's OK! :)

So he gets his 4 shots. . . then we switch and I get my 3. . . after a few minutes it's time to leave the exam room. Several minutes have passed since Rick got his needle sticks.  We stand up to leave the little room and Rick starts to feel faint so he lays down on the table.  After a minute I asked if he can make it to the waiting room or car, and he says yeah, so we walk down the hall and out into the waiting room.  Calvin and him sat down while I checked us out at the window.

Rick is feeling pretty terrible and is PALE.  We sat there a few minutes waiting for it to pass, then all of a sudden--THUNK! His head drops down fast and hard. . . kind of rolls to one side. . . his mouth is hanging wide open and really weird noises I've never heard are coming out his throat. .  . and his head starts shaking rhythmically!

I was in shock for a second before I jumped up to the receptionists' window, really panicked, didn't know what to say. . . stammered something about Rick maybe passing out. . . or a SEIZURE?!  (I didn't know at the time that seizing--although it's not actual seizing--can happen when someone faints.  So no worries!)

The lady paged Dr. B immediately.

He was "out" for what seemed like a long time. . . maybe 30-40 seconds?  I knelt down beside him (he's still upright in the chair but with his head down, which was still moving rhythmically) after I told the lady at the window that we need help.  I kept patting him and saying "Honey, are you OK?"  No response of course.  His arms and legs were so sweaty!

Dr. B came bursting out into the waiting room in a matter of seconds with a nurse, and that's right when Rick was coming-to.  Rick muttered groggily, something like, "Hmm I fell asleep. . . or, uh. . . did I pass out?"  Dr. B made him lie down with his feet up for awhile and they took care of him. . . had a good pulse, just had to wait for the blood to get back to his head.

And there were a LOT of people in the waiting room who saw this whole ordeal, and a line of about 8-10 people were standing at the receptionists' window (end of the day--busy I guess), so they're just a couple feet away from all the action because we were sitting in the seats closest to the window!

And, Calvin was with us the whole time.  He did fine--wasn't phased a bit and didn't seem at all weirded out or concerned by all the action.  He talks now about how Daddy fell asleep on him. :)

Dr. B said Rick's REALLY LUCKY he didn't uh--wet himself. . . because apparently he's seen a LOT of people pass out and a LOT of people wet themselves since the body relaxes so much.  And considering the LARGE audience he had in the waiting room--thank you God! :)

Here's the fun part--Rick has to make FOUR MORE appearances for shots in the next couple months!

Apparently this is how his body reacts to anything he has had done medically since college. . .and it's always awhile after the procedure was done.  I picked him up once at the dentist b/c he had gotten to the window to pay and had to lay down.  He tried to donate plasma and almost passed out when he was almost done, even though he was not uncomfortable or nervous.  He was really faint after another little procedure long after it was over, when it was time to go home.

So--Rick will not be going alone to any shot appointments, that's for sure!  He can't drive home!

I'm so proud of Rickilicious. . . what a great, sacrificial dad. . . he did such a great job and handled it like a champ. . . and he's got lots more shot appointments. . . and he didn't even pee his pants.

Oh the things he has gone through IN THE NAME OF LOVE!!!

He definitely got post-shot treats after going through all that!
We'll let you know if anything exciting happens at the next few shot appointments! :)  We'll have had 23 needle sticks between the two of us!

And His Name Is. . .

. . . Duncan!

Some of you guessed that easily, more people had a harder time with the second name clue even though I thought it was obvious--Rick!  We had fun guesses of Stripe, Waldo, and Blue :)  Sorry, it's just boring ol' Rick.

We had decided on our favorite boy's name several months ago, when we thought God had a domestic newborn in store for us. . . if it was a boy I really wanted our first son through adoption to have his father's name.  And not just his last name, because although that's really special and symbolic and meaningful, I wanted to take it a step further.  So it would be Duncan Rick if it were a boy.

Then we found out about B@guma and didn't quite know what to do about the name situation, especially after learning just a few weeks ago that B@guma is actually his surname, and he had a first name that we found out about on his birth certificate--S******.  But he's been called B@guma for more of his life than not (over 1 1/2 years in the orphanage).  "S******" is still important to us and we'll keep that a special piece of his story, but it just won't be on paper.  We couldn't drop "B@guma" because that's who he's been to us, that's what he goes by at the orphanage, and that's the part of his name that reflects his Ug@ndan heritage.  If it were acceptable to have FIVE names I'd pick Duncan Rick S****** B@guma. :)

So, here's our boy--Duncan Rick B@guma N.

Rick Just Got a Bonus. . . BUT. . .

. . . it all (plus some) went toward this nice *little* repair to our water line we had to have done last week, plus some months of really high water bills. . . I try to be thankful that God has provided for yet another need in perfect timing, but it's hard to not have a whiny heart!
Rick hasn't gotten a bonus before at work--not because he's not a fantastic employee. . . his company just doesn't really do bonuses, and they finally did this year because things finally reached a certain number for the last year.
It's company-wide, so it's a pretty small amount for a bonus.  But at least it was something, and it came right when our water line had to be replaced.

Any time we have had a major bill, it seems God always provides just what we need by some lump sum becoming available, for example, big bills coming RIGHT when we get our "extra" paycheck (our budget is set up on 2 paychecks a month but Rick gets paid every 2 weeks).
I'm just longing for the day when we finally get to just put a lump sum toward what WE want it to go toward--adoption, or our kids' education, or savings, or giving. . . rather than it just being a bill we have to pay because something went wrong.
Bleh.  No fun.
Anyway, I really am thankful.  And I really am annoyed at the bill and having to put all the bonus toward it.
Is it OK to be both?

The Big Name Reveal!

Some of you have heard us say the name. . . so no typing it in the comments if you know already!  Only genuine guesses :)
The middle names should be easy from the clues.
First name might be harder.

Calvin and Fallyn both sighed as they held and snuggled each clue, haha.  We need the REAL thing here fast!

Here's your clue for the first name:
The above clue makes me giggle, thinking of one of the students in my English class during my summer in China. . . they have American names when they're learning English. . . his name was Coffee.
Our son's name is not Coffee, by the way.
Or "Olive Garden Pickle" like Calvin wanted.  Or "Seahorse" like Fallyn wanted.  Sorry kids :(

Your clue for the first middle name:

The clue for the second middle name. . . brought to you by the letter B (should be easy if you've been reading the last few posts):

And that leaves the last name, which is a given!

Calvin Entered a T-Shirt Design Contest {Voting Day!}

There's a kids' t-shirt contest over at Ordinary Hero.  There are LOTS of awesome entries, but if you'd feel so inclined to vote for Pablo Candy-Finger's (Calvin's) design, just leave a comment at this Ordinary Hero blog post with his name and number -- Calvin #6.  Voting day is TODAY ONLY.

Check out all the designs--so neat to see the kids' hearts shine through in their artwork!  And if you feel you'd like to give your vote to a different design--go for it!  They're all great.

Our Boy's Name

We haven't really said B's name yet on our blog [I wrote this post before the last couple where I've spelled out his name, not just used "B". . .and I forgot I didn't publish this post!  Oops!]

That's mostly because we just don't know yet what we'll do about his name.  [But we've decided now!]

"B" is for B@guma.  That's what he's gone by at the orphanage and that's all our agency or us have known about his name up until recently.

Even though we've had a favorite boy name picked out for a long time and we plan on using that name, we've still only called him B.  Or Gumi as Calvin stated in the movie. :)
He's just B@guma to us right now!

We assumed we would use D----- for his first name, and keep B as a middle name.

Our agency just found out a couple days ago that on his birth certificate his name is S------ B@guma.  It's an "American" first name, not an ethnic Ug@ndan name.  So. . . we don't know what to do with that now! :)
[We're decided now.]

We definitely want to keep part of his Ug@ndan heritage/identity as part of his name--that's really important to us.

The kids INSIST on calling him B, not D, even though we've talked for several months (during the timeframe we thought a domestic newborn would be next) that if it's a boy, his name will be D.  It's kind of funny.  I've told them that even if his first name becomes D, they can still call him B if they want!

So. . . there's the explanation for all the cryptic initials--B, S, and D--some of you have seen on my Facebook and such. :)
[We'll reveal the name soon! :)
Like the kids' movie said, we'll do clues!]

Children In Prison -- Setting the Captives Free

Long before we started our Ug@nda adoption, I had found out about 60 Feet and began following their blog.

Then I "met" this adoptive mama who's been in Ug for about 25 weeks (?) now when they thought she'd be there 4-6 weeks.

She recently went out to visit the organization and the children.  CHILDREN who were found in this horrid prison outside Kampala not that long ago--alone, naked, shackled.  HUNDREDS.  Even babies.  Hell on earth it seemed.

Their lives are being turned around--praise God.  Please take a minute to read Melissa's blog post and see her pictures.  She gives a good account of who these babies and children are--why they're there. . .

. . .and then visit 60 Feet and see what you want to do about it.

Vintage Sewing

I'm SO in the mood to do some stash-busting and make some little boy stuff from my vintage/retro fabric stash.
It's hard to think of things to sew for boys, except quilts or blankets.
Any other ideas?

The blue/white gingham is a round vintage tablecloth that would make a great quilt back if I turn this collection into a toddler quilt!

This next one might be my favorite fabric find ever, although I haven't found a good use for it yet.
(Careful, Mindy, don't drool on your keyboard!  I know you'll like it as much as I do! *wink*)

Maybe it'll end up as part of some throw pillows in our basement family room. . .whenever we get around to that huge project.

I always have a ton of ideas for things I WANT to be sewing, but the reality is--I find it so hard to get around to it!  And I'm notorious for starting projects and leaving them for a long time, or maybe never finishing them at all.

Like Fallyn's bedspread.  It's only been about a year since I cut all the pieces!

And I NEED to start clearing out some of my too-huge stash of fabrics.

Anyone out there want to schedule a craft or sewing night???

Crafting

Yesterday was a snow day, so the kids and I made Valentine pockets for the FIVE of us.

They wanted B's in the middle.
They both said his is their favorite. :)
They're just paper plates with half a plate on the front.
Holes punched all the way around.
Ribbon and plastic heart beads.
We stuck ours up with scotch tape since they're on slick, smooth tile.
I got the idea from my friend.

Calvin came home from school with this.
They've been having lots of fun with it.
Construction paper, glue, marshmallows--that's it!

How You Can Help {ChipIn Feature}

I'm a little shy about announcing this, but not too shy to say it. . . there's a little ChipIn box in the sidebar of this blog now.  It's a secure, quick way to donate using paypal and other options.

This is how this adoption (and so many others we know of) has happened!
It takes a village to raise a child. . . and a village to bring one home!

We've been so blessed and humbled by an outpouring of support all along the way of people who have partnered with us to help "change the world for one". (slogan from Ordinary Hero
And yet, more people keep asking how they can help.  Wow.

If you're wondering what remaining expenses we have:
  • Travel costs.  We'll both be there 7-10 days, and I will stay a couple/few weeks after Rick goes back home.                     Calvin has almost raised enough "orphan money" for his little brother's plane ticket home, though, which has been his goal for a long time, in addition to other things he's raised money for.  You can help his goal by buying Pablo Candy-Finger Cards!
  • Fees at the US Embassy in Ug (medical check, visa, etc.) and other miscellaneous stuff at the very end.
  • Finalizing the adoption back in the US.  Still trying to find out if KS allows us to file independently or if we have to use an attorney.  Although "readoption" is quick and cheap in our county and is VERY similar to "finalizing", the courthouse doesn't know, so Rick has lots of digging to do at the Law Library.  If we have to use an attorney, we're looking at about $1500.  If we can file ourselves, it'll be much much much cheaper.

IT CAME IT CAME!

I'm so glad I didn't manage to sleep in this morning (snow day!), because I just got an email from our case manager saying that the document arrived!!!!!
We've been waiting a couple/few weeks for it!!!

I was praying late last night that TODAY would be the day we hear that it arrived.  Thank you, Lord!!!

We also found out another little tidbit about our boy from that email.
I've secretly been daydreaming/hoping this whole time (since we started in Dec and did not know his birthday yet) that when we found out his birthday, that it would be OCTOBER.
Yep, it is.  :)
October's been a significant month in our entire adoption journey starting in 2007.
I thought that'd be the icing on the cake if God had a child with an October birthday for us, too!
My birthday is in October as well--just 3 days after my newest birthday buddy. :)
I say "newest" because I have a twin brother, and a friend with the same birthday!

This means things can keep moving forward, and our agency can submit ALL the necessary documents on our end to the Ug@ndan attorney.  He'll review everything and file for a court date, which we hope we receive sooner rather than later!   Please pray for that!

By the way, did you see the photos from my previous post of where we get to go to meet our boy???

Beautiful Uganda

Not only do we get to travel to "the Pearl of Africa". . . some writings we came across online of travelers who have been all over Ug@nda have described our son's hometown as the most beautiful place in Ug@nda!

Can't wait to see our beautiful boy and his beautiful country and hometown!

Talking About Their Brother {Robot Movie}

The kids made a little movie where they talk about their new little brother from Ug@nda!

They told me what they wanted to say and I put in the words.  We did it for free at Xtranormal. . . you pick the characters, pick the voice, type the words in, and choose gestures and such if you want.  For Fallyn's words, I typed them the way she says them--like "jurst" instead of "just" and "burk" instead of "book".  You can kind of hear it. . . I think it's so cute.  She's phasing out saying "lurve" instead of "love". . .*sniff*.

I jurst love hearing what they had to say about their brother, and I love the last little bit. . . Calvin SO "gets it".  People can/should help orphans (even little people like Pablo Candy-Finger!), but they're still going to remain orphans unless they have a family.

We had a lot of fun. . . hope you enjoy it!
(I'm not sure if it's coming through properly...if you only see half a screen, click on the gray half and it'll take you to a new page to view it.)

Telling the Kids!

We told the kids about B during Christmas break. . . it was really late--they were so sleepy!  They didn't have a huge reaction--maybe in part to it being so late, or maybe because adoption's just been part of their lives as far back as they can remember, so I don't think it was big sensational news to them.  But they were excited and they are still really excited!

They obviously had Christmas on their mind :)  In case you can't hear/understand their answers when I asked what they've waited their whole lives for--Calvin said a DS, and Fallyn said a pink pig with a bottle and a teacup. :)

In this second part, Calvin says "This is who else I wanted besides Kotsa."  Kotsa is the boy we help sponsor from Drawn From Water who is 1 year older than him, and Calvin really wants him to be his brother. :)  Calvin had seen B's picture laying around the house prior to us telling the kids the news. . . but we always have pictures of orphans around, so I had just told him it was just a little in boy in Ug@nda we can pray for.

Twinkly (and sleepy) eyes!

Adoption Timeline

Mailing our dossier Tuesday of this week!

There are more detailed posts in the December archives of how this all started, but here's a recap of our Ug@nda adoption timeline so far:

December 11, 2010 (Saturday) - Found out about a little boy an agency was trying to find a family for. Asked lots of questions and prayed for a few days.

December 14 (Tuesday) - Said YES we want to move forward with this little guy!

December 15 (Wednesday) - Jumped on paperwork. . . needed our domestic home study switched to a Ug@nda home study. Lots of paperwork, emails, phone calls, looking up stuff online.

December 20 (Monday) - Our home study agency had a Ug@nda home study ready to fax to our new agency by Monday morning! Nothing short of a miracle! (read in the December archives) We really shouldn't have been able to have a UG home study until mid-January or later. Told the kids that night about B!

December 21 (Tuesday) - Sent flowers to the director of our home study agency, who went WAY above and beyond for us to have our UG home study so quickly.

January 5, 2011 - After the holidays, we got the official word that we were approved by our new agency.

January 10 - Attorney in Ug@nda reviews our home study and says everything looks good to go!

January 14 - Mailed in our I-600A to USCIS

January 25 - Case manager lets us know that she has the attorney's affidavit (a key piece of the process) he drew up. Now we know which documents we need in our dossier.

January 28 (Friday) - Rick and I took everything to the bank in the morning to get everything notarized, then made a zillion copies at Kinkos.

February 1 (Tuesday) - All 4 of us went to the post office to send our dossier to our agency. Calvin's school was cancelled so we got to go in the morning then have lunch to celebrate!

February 3 (Thursday) - Rick and I got fingerprinted (part of the I-600A/I-171H process) at the USCIS office. We tried to do that Tuesday but the USCIS office was closed because of the weather. Our schedule appointment isn't till next week but you CAN go in early!

*****Still waiting on one more piece of paper from Ug@nda to arrive at our agency so they can send our dossier and everything to UG. . . . then the attorney will file for a court date and we'll be waiting to hear when we get to go bring B home!!!*****

Last Friday after the trip to the bank for notarizations. . . lots and lots of copying, sorting, stapling. . . Rick on one machine, me on another.
If you know anything about international dossiers, you would not believe how quick and painless a Uganda dossier is. THANK YOU LORD! I didn't know if I had the stomach for the dossier process again when we found out about B and started praying about whether this was "it".
What an incredible surprise when I realized how. stinkin. painless. the dossier would be this time around. THANK YOU THANK YOU GOD!

Alaska to Africa {and another fabulous alien!}

The Alaska to Africa Project

Our friends Pat and Melissa, who started Alaska to Africa, were back in Kansas over the holidays and had another gift for Calvin. They're big supporters of his Pablo Candy-Finger efforts (click the label in the sidebar if you want to know what that's all about) and mailed this special gift to him several months ago--a metal-art replica of one of his "underwear aliens" he had drawn on a card that they bought.

This time they made him another awesome alien from one of his cards. It's the alien from his "Oooh, a new baby!" card (from this post). Any ideas how I can convince Calvin to let me keep them when he moves out some day? :)

If you haven't checked out their website before, you've gotta go have a look around!
They make the coolest metal-art continents and crosses. . . for walls, table-top. . .and all proceeds benefit orphans!

I'm so excited to finally know where our next child is coming from so we can finally order a continent!
You can bet we're going to be ordering an Africa with a heart over Uganda for our wall!

Check 'em out, place an order, help support orphans, and grab their button for your own blog while you're there!

The Alaska to Africa Project

Blessed by Many

As usual, there are way more nice people than mean people we encounter. And maybe that person wasn't being mean, maybe they honestly didn't receive the text book (but why would they not ask us about it through half.com? Part of the reason it was so suspicious.). . . Anyway. . .

I realized, to, that I need to just let it go and keep trusting God--He's always been faithful to provide for our needs as we seek to be good stewards with what He's given us and what He's called us to. Why wouldn't He still as the time draws nearer and nearer to bring B home?

Yesterday was a day full of reminders of His care and evidences of God providing through generous hearts!

*A friend stopped by unexpectedly and dropped off a gift card for me. This isn't the first time she's done that, either. :)

*Another friend contacted me to ask if she could send us to a Valentine's banquet--tickets on her! I'm sure we would've just went on a little date to get a latte or something--one, and we probably would've split it. :) The banquet is also an adoption fundraiser for 2 families which makes it even more special!

*Yet another friend--who I've just "met" in the online adoption realm--sent me a message that she wanted to address the problem of the mean person and send us a donation for our adoption. :)

*Yesterday was Calvin's birthday and Rick took him to Toys R Us this evening so he could pick out a Lego set with his $10 from Aunt Linda and Uncle Bill. They picked out something that had been in an $8 spot and it actually rang up $25! Rick told the cashier sorry, they'll have to go pick out something else. Genuine sad-tears ensued from the birthday boy who was so excited about this set that he now had to take back. The lady tracked them down in the Lego section and told them she can ring it up for $8. Thank you, nice lady, for blessing my little boy, too!

4.5!

Fallyn's officially 4 1/2 today!
Not really that noteworthy, except that the kids' half birthdays fall on each other's birthdays. Kinda fun.
Both born on a Wednesday, on the 2nd.
Exact head size, weight, and length, too. Weird.

Pic from last weekend in KC.
She loves her boots!
I'll be so sad when she outgrows them.
She says the blue one is faster.
We ended up with 2 pairs--blue ones we had found on clearance a long time ago for $7 (I think we intended them for Calvin and forgot about them), then we finally found another pair of red ones on Ebay. . . she had a smaller pair of red ones she wore constantly when she was 2 yrs old and we searched high and low for a bigger pair.
Kept an eye out for over a year and finally found a pair for sale.
So now she's got 2 colors of the same size, but always wears one of each.

We haven't seen any in a bigger size for years, so this may be the end of the iconic boots. :(

LOVES to have her back scratched. She'll plop down on one of our laps and say, "Do this" while holding up her hand in a claw shape. Many times she won't even say it any more, she'll just hold up her hand when put her blanket on her at night, or when she snuggles up with one of us.

Fallyn got to go with Grandpa Vail a couple weeks ago to stay at cousin Vivian's (5 hrs away) for the weekend! She LOVED it.
Here she's posing with her luggage (with V's bday present).
She packed some Thai tea for her and V. :)
She's still our experimental eater! This is a snack she got for herself--uncooked rolled oats, uncooked steel-cut oats, Kashi cereal, and some corn chip crumbs.
We share a liking for uncooked grains. I've always liked eating handfuls of stuff like that, too.

She totally claimed Calvin's lollipop with a scorpion in it that he got at Christmas that he was leery of even holding.
"Calvin can I have it?!" (lick lick lick)
"Mom, is this a real bug?" (Yes. . . lick lick lick)
"Is it dead or alive?" (Dead. . . lick lick)
Not phased a bit.
Carried it around a day and a half before she finally said, "Mom, can you jurst eat the yellow and I can jurst have the bug?"

She loves having a present to give Daddy and saves special treats for him.
For example, she'll save the last 2 fruit snacks from her package, carefully putting them in safekeeping all day and is so excited to give them to Rick when he gets home.
Here she saved 1/4 of a chocolate coin I gave her.
Reminds me of the widow and her 2 mites. . . not "much" but she gave what she had and that's why it's so sweet.

Six!

Calvin turns SIX today!!! Crazy!

Happy Birthday to our little man!

I made these last night in a hurry. . . for his kindergarten class today. . . and of course as soon as I was done we got an email that school was cancelled.
Hope they last till Thursday!

Last weekend we drove to KC and stayed with Austin and Ashley and went to the T-Rex Cafe for lunch on Saturday for Calvin's birthday with everyone on my side. Aunt Ann even got to come!

Calvin and Vail. . . such a pair!
The 5 oldest. Grandma Pam just got back from Malawi so she had cool stuff for the kids.
Wish this wasn't blurry :(
My 2 sisters-in-law, myself, and the matriarch.
My dad and my littlest nephew. Both so handsome!
My twin brother and Emmett. I love how tiny E looks! :)
Us! Missing one. :)

Our Schooling {and Mean People}

I finished my statistics class last semester (Rick took me to dinner for getting an A) and started a nutrition class this semester--Therapeutic Nutrition, which is geared toward nurses (or nurses-to-be).

This one's not so bad--since it's actually useful and interesting. :) It's all online, so that's nice. And it's only 3 credit hours, not 5 like stats.

Rick enrolled for 1 credit hour of thesis. . . not sure what that entails, except that all that is left is his thesis for his masters in mechanical engineering! Woohoo!

That'll take awhile. . . more than a semester, but I don't know how long.

Part II of this post is titled:

MEAN PEOPLE SUCK.

Speaking of my stats class, I sold my textbook (which was stinkin' expensive) online. Woohoo--$60 back!!! NOT. We totally got stiffed. The buyer must've taken advantage of us, because yesterday we got notification that they had contacted their credit card company to reverse the transaction.

And of course, I didn't get a tracking number when I shipped it so I have no proof it got there. Totally kicking myself. Always. Get. A. Tracking. Number.

I have no one to blame but myself, but seriously?! That's a big chunk of change to us. . . especially in light of our adoption. My mistake and mean people are really making me fume today!

Let it go. . . let it go. . . let it go. . .

Daddy

Fallyn talks/sings about Daddy. . . disclaimer: Rick did indeed call in to work the day before Christmas Eve to stay home with us instead, but he was using earned-time-off :)
